Mental Health

Improving one mind at a time

There is a link between obesity, body size, and mental health. According to research, individuals with larger bodies have a higher risk for symptoms of depression, anxiety, insomnia, and ptsd due to weight stigma, discrimination, and lower self-esteem. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a mental health disorder that causes severe irritability, depression, or anxiety in the week or two before a female’s menstrual period. There is a link between poor nutrition and mental health. Both obesity and mental illness can cause stress and decrease quality of life and are associated with an increase in disability, morbidity, and mortality. Stress and weight are closely correlated. When under stress, the body releases hormones that may produce changes in the brain and gut, making us crave food to calm us. There are medications designed to relieve these unwanted symptoms. We offer antidepressants, antianxiety, anxiolytic medications, and more.
